Project Name: Weirton Regional Economic Diversification Summit (REDS)

Description: In October 2018, Sustainable Strategies DC orchestrated an Economic Development Administration (EDA)-sponsored Regional Economic Development Summit (REDS), which helped chart the course for Weirton's renewal and revitalization with a specific focus on economic development, transportation connectivity and workforce development. This REDS brought federal, state, regional, and private sector officials together to examine three of Weirton's priority areas for revitalization, including the Three Springs Business Park, Downtown Weirton and over 1,100 acres of former Weirton Steel brownfield sites now owned by the Frontier Group of Companies.

Funding Awarded:

  • EDA Public Works Grant - $1.7 million (2018)

  • EDA Assistance to Coal Communities Grant - $300,000 (2018)

  • EPA Brownfields Cleanup Revolving Loan Fund - $800,000 (2018)

Success: Paving the Way for Downtown Economic Revitalization in Monaca, PA


Client: Monaca, Pennsylvania

Project Name: Monaca Gateway Project

Description: Sustainable Strategies DC has helped the small community of Monaca and Beaver County secure over $4.7 million in resources from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,  Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, and others to upgrade the Borough's main street corridor to be ready for major investments that will transform former steel sites, revitalize brownfields along the Ohio River and improve business opportunities in Downtown Monaca.  These infrastructure upgrade projects will stimulate new economic investments in Monaca, as manufacturing growth accelerates around the Borough in Beaver County.

Funding Awarded:

  • EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant - $400,000 (to Beaver County (2015)

  • Two Pennsylvania Multimodal Grants - $3.3 million (2016, 2018)

  • Livability through Smart Transportation Grant from Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission - $1 million (2018)​

Project Name: Transitioning from a Coal-Based Economy 

Description: Johnstown utilized EDA funds for business expansions and to stimulate economic growth. This funding targeted distressed areas with the potential for new manufacturing, business incubation and other job creation initiatives. Investments provided will help develop a launchpad for business growth with a maker space, collaborative space and gallery space as part of a larger initiative that will create 150 jobs and leverage $4.5 million in additional private investment.
