Sustainable Strategies DC (S2) is a small strategic consulting, grantwriting and government affairs firm based in Washington, DC. S2 represents local governments and non-profit organizations across America, helping them obtain resources for urban revitalization, economic development, and sustainability projects. S2 seeks to hire a starting-level Associate & Grant-Writer who will support clients with grant-writing, policy research and strategic consulting on local revitalization projects. The Associate will be provided substantial support and mentoring from senior S2 staff, but will be expected to be a quick study who is motivated to take on increasing responsibility, including client management responsibilities. Excellent writing and verbal skills are a must, a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred, and a zest for sustainable development and federal policy-making is desired.
S2 is ready to offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package for a full-time starting Associate & Grantwriter. This government affairs position will provide direct support on individual clients, coalitions, business promotional efforts, and a variety of other activities, including:
a. Assistance in research, drafting, packaging, and submitting grants and other resource applications to federal, state and philanthropic organizations, with the hope and intent that you will be managing your own grant applications for clients within the first year.
b. Assistance to the firm in the preparation and implementation of funding strategies for client projects.
c. Assistance in organizing and participating in client relations, services and management, including phone calls, meetings, client trips to Washington, DC (including securing meetings with government officials and others), and trips by S2 staff to client localities. We would like you to help set up, participate and ultimately lead monthly client coordination calls with retainer clients.
d. Research into congressional, federal/state agency and philanthropic matters with respect to our primary area of business, community revitalization and environmental sustainability.
e. Participation with senior staff in advocacy strategies and activities to federal and state officials for client goals.
Desired qualifications and skills include:
■ Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university is the preferred qualifications for this starting-level position. Candidates with 1 - 2 years of relevant work experience and/or have completed a Master's degree will also be considered.
■ Professional interest in community development, public policy, sustainability, public health, or other relevant issues.
■ Strong written and oral communication skills.
■ Strong organizational skills; ability to handle multiple task simultaneously and maintain a system of tracking, monitoring, and prioritizing tasks and projects.
■ Strong analytic and critical thinking skills with the ability to summarize and describe issues in the areas covered as well as analyze and explain legislative and administrative facets of topics.
■ A can-do attitude and willingness to pitch in as needed to do what it takes to provide high quality products and services.
■ Mature, detail-oriented individual able to work both independently and in teams.
■ Must have excellent time management skills and an ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
■ Demonstrated experience using Microsoft suit, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
